Background information about Aurora Symphony
Iceland’s name reveals a hint of what it is like in winter, but its snow cloaked beauty beneath the aurora borealis must be seen to be fully appreciated. To perfectly encapsulate it on camera requires a list of factors to fall into place - not least a willingness and patience to brace the freezing conditions for hours - but occasionally, it’s simply a case of being in the right place at the right time.
I was thankfully blessed with such a moment when exploring the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Thingvellir National Park, a valley nestled between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, in the depths of midwinter. My initial subject was Oxararfoss, a waterfall that freezes in this season to create a fantastical feature, but mid-shoot my priorities changed as the aurora borealis began to descend behind me.
There was no way to get both the waterfall and magical dance of the Northern Lights in the same frame, but thankfully, Thingvellir has no shortage of spectacular sites to shoot. I trudged through the snow to the ravine of Silfra, and found the perfect composition waiting.
Every facet that makes Iceland’s winters so magical was present: fresh snow a meter deep; the skeletons of birch trees; and, of course, an unspeakably beautiful display of the aurora above. The more shots I took, the more eager I was to feature Silfra significantly in the foreground; never frozen due to the fact it is a spring and perfectly reflecting the skies above, it adds the element of ethereality that makes Iceland so special.
The final part of the composition I sought to exaggerate was the way Silfra curves, creating the illusion of a beautiful path turning to unknown new sites in this breathtaking winter world.
