Background information about Frosted Falls
Many Icelanders like to say that their country only has summer and winter, with the seasons between them too fleeting and indistinct to warrant mention. I disagree. While the transition between the two is, indeed, swift, there are rare but spectacular moments where the country truly epitomizes the beauty of spring and fall.
At Hraunfossar waterfall, I was able to capture a perfect moment of the latter. This wonder of west Iceland is unlike most of the country’s other waterfalls, which are either very tall, very powerful, or both, already making it uniquely photogenic. Rather than charging off a cliff or racing down a ravine, it streams gently in thousands of rivulets off a shelf of lava into a river, the former of which is lined with Icelandic birch trees and shrubs.
These beautiful examples of Icelandic flora are where one can best find the ambiance of Autumn, when they lose their green luster and crispen with orange and gold. As I departed Reykjavik for Hraunfossar, the bright conditions of the day turned; flakes of snow began to shower from the sky, and it seemed my mission to prove the existence of an Icelandic fall had been resoundingly squashed by the arrival of winter.
You can thus imagine my delight when, reaching the site, the weather subsided and left nothing but a gentle dusting on the vivid foliage. Forming an autumnal composition was then just a matter of the right framing. I chose a long exposure to capture the ongoing movement of the still flowing water, showing that in spite of the snow’s whispers of it coming, the deep cold of winter was yet to arrive. I was also able to include three, equally spaced rivulets of water in the frame, which lead the eye up the dark, stained rock into the distinct colors of the fleeting season I sought to capture.
