Background information about The Gates to Highlands
Rainbows have a special place in the mythology of the Old Norse Vikings, said to lead between our world and Asgard, the plane of Odin, Thor, and Loki. They also have great significance in Iceland, symbolizing the mystical effects of light that come with such an Arctic location and the abundance of water for which the country is renowned.
For landscape photographers, they furthermore make a fantastic subject, bringing joy, mysticism, and the sense of a fleeting moment in history to any image. Of course, however, one cannot predict when a rainbow will occur, least of all in Iceland when the weather can change by the moment. As such, one appearing is a testament to patience and luck, and an incredible reward on a shoot.
On this helicopter journey over Iceland’s magnificent Highlands, I was eager to capture the vibrant green moss that manages to find life in this otherwise inhospitable world of black sand deserts, ominous clouds, and jagged peaks. The images I was getting were already capturing this to my standards, with spotlights of sunlight breaking from above and the rushing river below bringing some beautiful lines into the frame. Once the rainbow emerged, however, the composition was complete.
Not only did it bring the color and vitality I was seeking to include in the scene but brought to mind immediately what the first Icelanders would have felt looking upon such phenomena. The way it arches over the landscapes into the clouds above, it is easy to see how the Vikings would have imagined it to be a bridge into the heavens. To me, however, it appeared more like a mystical gate over the river, guarding the entrance to the Highlands.
